How to Use This Fuel Consumption Calculator

Getting an accurate result takes four steps and under 30 seconds. The calculator works with any unit you prefer, whether you measure in litres, gallons, miles, or kilometres. The most common mistake is estimating instead of recording, so use your pump receipt and your odometer every time.

Fuel Consumption Formula Explained

The fuel consumption formula divides fuel used by distance traveled, then arranges the result in your chosen unit. You only need two inputs: how far you went and how much fuel you used to get there. Every unit on this site comes from the same two numbers rearranged in a different direction.

L/100km = (Fuel Used in Litres / Distance in km) x 100

MPG US = Distance in Miles / Fuel Used in US Gallons

KM/L = Distance in km / Fuel Used in Litre

A lower L/100km means better efficiency. A higher MPG or KM/L means better efficiency. Most fuel economy research uses L/100km as its standard unit because it scales linearly, meaning double the L/100km equals double the fuel cost at any price per litre.

Real Trip Example

A Toyota Camry drove 450 km and used 38 litres of petrol. Divide 38 by 450 and multiply by 100 to get 8.44 L/100km. At $1.85 per litre, that trip cost $70.34 in fuel. Our monthly fuel cost calculator scales this across your full monthly distance automatically.

What Is a Good Fuel Consumption Rate?

For a standard petrol car, under 8.0 L/100km or above 29 MPG is considered good in real-world mixed driving. These benchmarks come from EPA fuel economy testing and transport department vehicle data across multiple markets. The right number depends on your vehicle class because comparing a pickup truck to a compact car on the same scale tells you nothing useful about either one.

Always compare your result against a vehicle in the same class and engine size range as yours. A number that looks high for a sedan can be excellent for a full-size SUV towing a trailer. Use the table below to find the right benchmark for your specific vehicle type.

Each factor compounds with the others, so a car with low tyre pressure, a dirty air filter, and an aggressive driver can use 30 to 40 percent more fuel than the same car maintained and driven smoothly. RealSpeed

Wind resistance increases with the square of your speed. At 70 mph you fight 36 percent more aerodynamic drag than at 55 mph.

Engine Type

A 1.5-litre turbocharged engine can match a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated engine for power while using less fuel. Diesel engines extract more energy from each litre than petrol at the same distance.

Tyre Pressure

Driving 6 PSI below recommended pressure increases fuel consumption by upto 3 percent. Check the sticker inside your driver door, not the maximum printed on the tyre sidewall.

Hold Steady Speed

Driving 60 mph instead of 75 mph on a 400-mile trip reduces fuel consumption by up to 20 percent. That difference compounds on every long drive you take.

Check Tyre Pressure

Check pressure every two weeks and before any long trip. Correct pressure gives you a free 1 to 3 percent fuel saving with no other change required.

Service Your Engine

A faulty oxygen sensor alone can increase fuel consumption by up to 40 percent, according to EPA data. Fresh spark plugs and a clean air filter each contribute 1 to 4 percent.

Remove Extra Weight
